This picnic blanket is built around a 200 by 148 centimetre cotton canvas top, wide enough for four adults and a spread of food without anyone ending up on the grass. Cotton canvas behaves differently from the thin synthetics most picnic mats use: it is quieter underfoot, warmer to sit on for an hour, and it stays put on a slight slope instead of sliding away every time somebody shifts their weight.
The underside is treated to hold off ground moisture, so morning dew or a lawn that dried only an hour ago will not soak through to the seat of your jeans. The whole mat weighs roughly 1.2 kilograms and rolls down to about 11 by 37 centimetres, secured with a leather strap and stowed in its packing bag, which is compact enough to lash to the outside of a daypack or drop in the boot of a car.
It earns its keep well beyond picnics: a groundsheet under a tent porch, a clean surface for gear at camp, a play mat in the garden, a layer at the beach, or a party blanket on a balcony.
